Final Fantasy Infinite
Miasma is the name given to the noxious air that blankets the world. Though the effects are not yet fully known, it is known that it does two things:
- It is poisonous to most creatures, creating a slow agonizing death with lots of exposure. Mild exposure causes miasma sickness, the symptoms of which are a distinct darkening of the skin and coughing up black. It can be treated and cured with medical care, though the symptoms can be temporarily staved off with curative magics.
- It is the source of many of the monsters surrounding the cities and inhabiting the trade routes.
A Crystallis has the ability to filter the breathable air from the Miasma, creating a bubble of safe air. Curiously, Moogles appear immune to the dangerous effects of the Miasma, able to live and breathe normally in the deadly vapors – the only sapient and friendly species to be able to do so.
The Miasma has been here as far back as we can remember, and many of our oldest texts corroborate this information. The source of all of it is the corruption brought by a meteor that impacted the world near the end of The Crystal War, summoned by the dragons as a last-ditch effort. Only the great Crystallis saved us.
